Amsterdam Best Gay Sauna Guide 2026: Sauna Nieuwezijds

The definitive guide to Amsterdam's premier gay sauna, Sauna Nieuwezijds. From the massive jacuzzi to youth discounts and strict Dutch etiquette, here is what to expect.

Amsterdam Gay Sauna Guide 2026: Inside Sauna Nieuwezijds

Amsterdam is one of Europe's most liberal and sex-positive cities, and its gay sauna culture reflects exactly that. Clean, safe, and welcoming to men of all ages and body types, the city's sauna scene is a staple of the local LGBTQ+ experience. Here is everything you need to know.

Sauna Nieuwezijds: The Main Event

Located right in the historic centre of Amsterdam, just a short walk from Dam Square, Sauna Nieuwezijds is the undisputed king of Amsterdam's gay sauna scene. It is large, impeccably maintained, and constantly busy.

  • The Crowd: A genuinely mixed crowd. You will find locals, expats, and tourists of all ages and body types. It's known for being unpretentious.
  • Facilities: A massive central jacuzzi that acts as the main social hub, a large steam room, a dry Finnish sauna, extensive relaxation areas, a socializing maze, private rooms, and a fully licensed bar/café area where guys hang out in their towels.
  • Pricing: Expect to pay around €25–€30 for entry. Crucially, they offer a significant "Youth Reduction" for guys aged 18–25, which keeps the crowd diverse and energetic.
  • When to go: Friday and Saturday evenings/nights are the busiest. However, "Rainy Sunday afternoons" are legendary in Amsterdam — the sauna gets packed when the Dutch weather turns bad.

Sauna Etiquette in Amsterdam

  • Consent is everything: The Dutch are direct. A polite shake of the head or a verbal "no thanks" should be respected instantly. Likewise, read body language and eye contact before approaching.
  • Hygiene: You must shower thoroughly with soap before entering the jacuzzi, steam room, or regular sauna. This is strictly observed.
  • No Phones: Phones and cameras are strictly banned beyond the locker room to protect everyone's privacy. Leave it in your locker.
  • What to bring: Nothing but yourself and your bank card. You will be given a towel, a locker key, and flip-flops at reception. Condoms and lube are freely available from dispensers throughout the venue.

Beyond the Saunas: Warmoesstraat

If you prefer a bar setting with socializing facilities, head to Warmoesstraat (the leather/fetish street). Venues like Eagle Amsterdam, Dirty Dicks, and Web operate as traditional bars at the front, but feature extensive, dark socializing and play areas at the back. Most enforce a loose dress code (no sports shoes, sometimes bare chest required).
