Sitges Gay Beach Guide 2026: Europe's Top Gay Riviera

40 minutes from Barcelona, Sitges offers Europe's best gay beach (Playa del Mort), legendary Parrots Bar, February Carnival drag parades, and a genuinely welcoming Mediterranean vibe — all in one compact package.

Sitges Gay Beach Guide 2026: Europe's Great Gay Riviera

Sitges is a small Catalan town 40 minutes by train from Barcelona. But don't let its size fool you — every summer, tens of thousands of gay travellers converge here, making it one of Europe's most concentrated LGBTQ+ destinations. Sun, sea, late nights, and a genuinely welcoming community: Sitges delivers all of it.

Getting to Sitges

  • Train (recommended): R2S line from Barcelona Sants station, ~40 minutes, ~€5 each way. Runs frequently. Use the T-Casual 10-trip card for best value
  • Taxi: ~€40–60 from Barcelona (traffic-dependent)
  • Car: Parking is nearly impossible in peak summer. Train is strongly recommended

The Gay Beach: Playa del Mort

Known locally as "La Bassa Rodona" or more dramatically as "Playa del Mort" (Dead Man's Beach), this is the heart of Sitges gay beach life. Walk 25 minutes southwest from the town centre, past Hotel Calipolis, and over the rocks to reach a sheltered cove.

  • Location: Follow the coastal path past Hotel Calipolis, then scramble over the rocks
  • Vibe: Clothing-optional (FKK). Diverse mix from muscled bears to gay couples and friends
  • Facilities: No kiosk — bring water, sunscreen, and snacks
  • Best season: June–September. Peak in July–August

Sitges Carnival 2026 (February)

One of Sitges's biggest events — February Carnival packs the town with spectacular drag parades and queer celebrations. 2026 Carnival is scheduled February 13–22. A completely different energy to summer, but equally memorable.

Gay Bars & Clubs

  • Parrots Bar — The most famous gay bar in Sitges. Open terrace overlooking the street, drag queens making appearances, perfect for sunset drinks
  • El Candil — Atmospheric old-school terrace bar, best in the early evening for a glass of cava
  • Organic Bar — Trendy cocktail bar with a younger crowd, gets busy after 10pm
  • Mediterráneo — The main gay club with a proper dancefloor. Weekend nights are essential Sitges
  • XXX Bar — Darker, more masculine atmosphere for those seeking that vibe

Practical One-Day Itinerary

  • 10:00: Train from Barcelona Sants (arrives 10:40)
  • 11:00–17:00: Playa del Mort beach time. Bring your own supplies to keep costs down
  • 17:00–19:00: Wander the Old Town. The streets behind the Sant Bartomeu church are photogenic
  • 19:00–21:00: Sunset drinks at Parrots Bar (cocktails €8–12)
  • 21:00–23:00: Tapas dinner (€15–25/person)
  • 23:00+: Mediterráneo for dancing, or take the train back to Barcelona

Budget (Day Trip)

  • Transport: ~€10 return
  • Food/lunch: €10–15 or bring your own
  • Dinner: €20–30
  • Drinks: €25–40
  • Total: ~€65 budget / €100+ comfortable

Safety

Sitges is one of Europe's safest gay destinations. The town is genuinely LGBTQ+-friendly at the community level, not just commercially. Pickpocketing risk in peak crowds — the same basic vigilance you'd apply in Barcelona. Overall: very relaxed and welcoming.
