The Tiergarten — Berlin's central park — is a vast, ancient urban forest that stretches from the Brandenburg Gate westward for several kilometres. 210 hectares of woodland, meadow, and winding paths providing a green sanctuary in the heart of the city. For the gay community, the Tiergarten has served a different but equally important purpose for well over a century: it is Berlin's most storied and enduring outdoor socializing ground.

The history of gay socializing in the Tiergarten stretches back to the late 19th century. Through the Weimar Republic, through the terror of the Nazi period, through the divided city years, and into reunification and the present day, the Tiergarten has remained a constant in gay Berlin life. Today, socializing takes place primarily in the western and southern sections of the park. The area around the Grosser Stern westward toward Bellevue Palace is particularly active.

Unlike some socializing spots, the Tiergarten is completely integrated into everyday Berlin life. Joggers, dog walkers, families on bicycles — they all share the park with those who come for other reasons. This normalisation is part of what makes the experience noteworthy: the park exists as a genuinely public space where queer life and mainstream life coexist naturally. For visitors from Japan, where such spaces are rare, the Tiergarten represents a beautifully German approach to public life.

A piece of living history. I've been coming here for 15 years. The atmosphere changes with the seasons — lazy summer afternoons, misty autumn evenings. There's always someone here. Uniquely Berlin.

Busy summer Friday evening. Discreet, relaxed atmosphere. Everyone is respectful, pleasant mix of tourists and locals. The park itself is beautiful too.
